Hey all I just published a video discussing a question I get a lot around where to build custom software and where to buy vendor software when building internal development platforms? Would love your thoughts on the video. Would also love to know how you advise your orgs where to buy and where to build?

In the last decade, we’ve added multi-region, multi-cloud, containers, serverless and Kubernetes technologies to the networks we already had. Join the Meetup with @Marc Barry (enclave.io) and Alistair tomorrow, 7pm CEST where they will cover how identity-based networking can help you manage this increasing complexity. Sign up here 👈

<!here> This is something a lot of you have asked in the past few months (hence the annoying @ tag, sorry 🙂).. How much do platform engineers make? I know we are mostly here for the tech and innovation, but this is important information when you are thinking about changing careers, asking for a raise, etc. We figured the best way to answer this question is to collect anonymous answers from the community. It will take you 2mins and would be very helpful 👇👇 we'll share the results next week. https://humanitec.typeform.com/salarysurvey

If you’re in DevOps, SRE or software engineering in general you’ll love this. You can now both monitor your Kubernetes costs and get cost reduction insights completely FREE with CAST AI. We’ve just officially opened cost monitoring feature up to the public at CAST AI and it’s got no limits to the number of clusters you can connect or historical data you can access. Check it out here: https://cast.ai/cloud-cost-monitoring/

We need a few more responses to make this statistically relevant though 🙂 To all platform engineers, product owners, cloud infrastructure folks in here, pls help us fill this out 👇 https://humanitec.typeform.com/salarysurvey

Hey everyone - wanted to throw out an open-ended question. How much of your platform work also includes usage / provisioning of 3rd party SaaS tooling - like including Datadog, Harness, Okta, Slack, etc. Background: I'm writing a blog post, and I'm trying to get some anecdotes "from the field" on what's all included in platform engineering. My hypothesis is that it's not just Terraform + some internal wrappers + UI

A lot of what I see about platform engineering is based on a tech stack that includes Kubernetes and Terraform. I am interested in orgs that have implemented platform engineering in a fully (or near as possible) AWS native environment. I am talking mostly Lambda compute maybe some ECS or Beanstalk, CDK for IaC, Code* for CI/CD, etc. Is anyone here using such a stack or have you seen any good resources on building a platform engineering initiative on this stack?

Hi there, we published a new article on how to find automation opportunities in DevOps, using a technique borrowed from the data mining space. The article contains a Python notebook and code examples to follow along. https://www.okayhq.com/blog/automating-devops-tasks-using-process-mining. Curious to see if other people think about DevOps in this way - essentially applying data-driven product thinking / analytics to building a platform.

Employer Brand Videos Speak_ helps employers build relationships with diverse engineering talent at scale. Our growing community of 30k underrepresented engineers seeks access to connections and knowledge. We’d love to invite you to participate in a new product we’re launching that lets you amplify your employer brand reach through short, informal videos that feature your team. It’s part careers site, part interactive engineering blog with 10x the impact of a job description. We’re building a library of employer-branded 1-15-minute videos that educate our community. Below are the possible video categories as well as guidelines and a script outline. We can work with you to generate ideas, help with production, or support you in any way required. Categories Tech talk: engineers at your company might share the tech stack they use daily, a project they are working on, or talk about a cool new open-source library they’re using. Interview: tell candidates what to expect in your tech interviews. Help them avoid common pitfalls and how to stand out as an engineer. Culture: give engineers a taste of what it’s like to work at your company Please reply if you are interested in learning more abou this pilot

Hey folks 👋 We created a page for 'Everything as Code' with examples for each type of system, kind of a reference that can help put the broader picture in perspective. Figured I'd share especially given the platform engineering focus . Let me know what you think in a 🧵 https://klo.dev/blog/the-ultimate-guide-to-everything-as-code/

I have a bit of a question about something we are constantly working to improve, but we feel like we haven't hit the ultimate recipe yet - how do you verify your platform changes when you create a PR? For example, say you are providing a kubernetes platform with all the usual tooling - when you create a PR to for example modify Prometheus config, how do you automate the verification of your change? • Do you create entire clusters on demand per PR to test the full stack to ensure your change doesn't impact other stuff in the platform (slower / more expensive, but can verify multiple PRs in parallel)? • Do you have a persistent platform that your PR changes are applied on (quicker)? If so how do you reset this to 'master' without interfering with another incoming change? Should the cluster be 'locked' until your PR is 'verified'? • Do you only test the actual parts that have changed (quicker)? Or do you do a full apply (more complete picture of impact of change, but slower)? So my question is not so much about tooling that is used to verify changes, but more about the dev flow around PRs when it comes to platforms, which often seems to be a lot more unwieldy than pure 'software' Hopefully what I am asking makes sense 😄
