Hello! I am looking a video presentation posted here, where the presenter gave us a very good way to conduct User Research interviews (questions to ask) when trying to empathize and get data to build your platform. Somehow disappear from my sight. Anyone has the link?

Hello team! Hope you all are well. Question: What expense nature do you put your platform teams in Let me elaborate the question further: I’m a CTO for a company that has a few products now. We are starting to calculate the P&L for each of these products. So I need to classify my platform teams as part of CoGS, R&D, or G&A. Have any of you ever faced something like this? Or do you have any idea how I can proceed?

Hi all… We are currently discussing two approaches for building our dev platform 1. abstract cloud completely from dev teams - for databases (PostgreSQL) for example, the dev team would just get connection string, and they are good to go 2. abstract cloud but build reusable artifacts - for databases, that would be terraform module for example. But then the dev team is responsible for using it. Option 1 is appealing because it is 100% hands-off for the dev team, but the concern is that as we keep adding services to the platform, the Platform team will become a bottleneck, and they will be dragged into team-related operations. Option 2 is appealing because the same best practices are encapsulated within reusable artifacts, but responsibility and work load is shared between the Platform and Dev teams. The concern here is that it is unnecessary complexity For context - This is for the mid-enterprise company with ~30 scrum teams and one Platform team of 10-15 engineers. I would love to hear other people’s opinions.

When reading gets overwhelming, I watch videos or listen to podcasts. Let me share 2 golden ⭐ talks I recently watched about Golden Paths: 1.

Golden Paths to achieve high performance with an Internal Developer Platform▾

. I think Alex's presentation was spot-on naming points that help enable successful DevOps transformations in large engineering organizations. 2. @Mathieu Frenette’s talk

on growth challenges, generic helm charts, and golden paths▾

. He shares how to keep golden paths from turning into golden cages. Definitely recommend watching!

Found the list of 17 recommended DevOps tools for infrastructure automation. So far my team and I have tried Terraform, Pulumi, GitHub, Helm and Kubernetes. It would be interesting to hear opinions of ones who used other tools like Harness, Qovery, Doppler, Vault, Grafana and others as I honestly have no opinion about them. https://medium.com/@rphilogene/17-best-devops-tools-to-use-in-2022-for-infrastructure-automation-and-monitoring-b3470cf9e00f

Hello everyone! Super happy to have found this slack. I run the platform engineering team at Weave in Lehi, UT. We have been building an internal developer platform for over 4 years and before the term platform engineering was a mainstream idea. Our team is called the developer experience team. Here's our journey to platform engineering: https://engineering.getweave.com/post/platform-engineering-at-weave/. Excited to be a part of this amazing shift in the industry!

I’m sure a handful of y’all have already seen this, but I couldn’t resist sharing it anyways. 🙂 My latest article in The New Stack covers the differences between DevOps, SRE, and platform engineering. The gaps are smaller than you might think, but they’re also what make platform engineering so important. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Is there anything I missed? https://thenewstack.io/how-is-platform-engineering-different-from-devops-and-sre/

Debating whether platform as a product approach is appealing for you or not? Then tomorrow is a perfect opportunity to join the webinar with Syntasso’s @Paula Kennedy where she will discuss: • How to keep an “internal” focus on areas such as ensuring the platform team is able to respond quickly to change and prioritize workload • How to manage “external” concerns such as seeking fast feedback from platform users, marketing the platform and improving developer experience • Suggestions on how these “ins” and “outs” align when treating your platform as a product Join the webinar: https://www.meetup.com/platform-engineers-atx-online/events/287900043/

Yesterday I shared the full infographic for the Platform Engineering salary survey, so you can have it all in one place when asking for a salary 📈 Let’s take a closer look at the annual numbers. In the recent article about how Platform Engineering is different from DevOps and SRE @Aeris raised the question: is platform engineering just a title you can leverage for a salary bump? Leaving the “title only” for other discussions, the survey results show that platform engineers indeed make significantly more than DevOps, especially in Europe (19,4% more 😮). Still asking yourself is it worth turning your career path towards platform engineering? Numbers speak for themselves 😉

Talking about average salary....in Europe can be extremely misleading. Europe consists of 44-ish countries, with VERY different levels of cost of living, and - no surprise - VERY different levels of salary. So the second you publish average numbers, they next set of questions arise - difference within Europe?.... Undoubtedly the rising number of remote workers in Europe, (with lets say French Salary living in Greece for ex.) will, slowly level the field a bit, but not drastically. Even the extremes of North America will vary drastically.
