Hi all. I'm wondering how people who are running platform products that span across a large number of internal customers go about making major system changes: • how do you communicate changes? • how do you align on changes? • how to you get sign off from management/stakeholders? • Is there some system of escalation/enforcement (relevant probably only to large engineering orgs)

Hi everyone, I started the hottest topic of the month a few months ago regarding Landing Zones in Cloud Platforms. My colleagues and I dug deeper into the topic and started working on a comprehensive comparison of different existing Landing Zone Solutions for the different Cloud Providers. The first result of this is a comparison of the solutions available for GCP. If you are interested in that topic, please have a read into my blog post. Similar comparisons for Azure and AWS will follow soon. I’d be happy about any feedback, improvement ideas for the post or experiences you made with those solutions 🙂

Let’s dive into the technical areas most platform engineers focus on. The first 3 areas (Docker/Kubernetes, IaC and CI/CD) were expected to take top positions, but I found the last two ones interesting. It’s good to know that both networking and DB take a solid piece of the pie in the workflow of platform engineers. How much time do you spend on networking and taking care of DBs?

Check out the latest @TFIR interview with our CTO Nati Shalom discussing how the “Increasing Complexity Is Hindering Developers From Developing Apps” Developers are facing many challenges when developing apps and managing complex infrastructure. In this episode of TFiR Let’s Talk, @Swapnil Pawar Bhartiya sits down with Nati Shalom, Founder and CTO of Cloudify, to discuss the key challenges developers face today. Nati goes into detail about the complexity #DevOps and engineers are grappling with and the concept of Internal Developer Platform (IDP) to help obstruct the complexity of #Kubernetes. Nati shares details of their latest release, Cloudify 6.4 and what they are working towards in the future. https://www.tfir.io/increasing-complexity-is-hindering-developers-from-developing-apps-nati-shalom/

We've released another article in our platform engineering series. This one is focuses on how we can accelerate the ATO process through the use of a platform. For those of you not familiar with government, ATO stands for Authority to Operate which is a very labor intensive process that every application has to go through in order to be deployed by a US federal agency.

The last nugget from the salary report we shared this week: flexibility. It’s great to see that the working environment moves towards the flexible direction providing the freedom of choice where to work from! If you want to check practical statistics about remote working, I found this article interesting. Want to hear the voice of this community. Do you guys prefer a hybrid or fully remote work setup?

Since value stream mapping/management/metrics come up quite often as evidence for the value prop for platform engineering we used the recent State of VSM Report to give a quick summary and provide our own thoughts. Bit of a living doc as the landscape is shifting quickly towards more engineering-driven approaches. Happy to hear opinions. https://www.logilica.com/blog/the-state-of-value-stream-management-2022

The CfP phase for the Serverless Summit 22 is done, and the Tech Talks have been selected. 🙌 One Slot is still open and will be voted by the community. So now it’s your turn! 🚀 • Option 1: Build Data lakes, not data swamps • Option 2: Build Serverless Apps For A Global Audience • Option 3: Blazing fast Serverless with Rust • Option 4: The next-generation serverless app framework All the Talks are great, but may the best win! Choose wisely! ✌️ https://www.linkedin.com/posts/serverless-summit_serverlesssummit22-serverless-summit[…]471477002241-oFOA?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

I’m curious why something like “developing new platform features” isn’t included in this list. For the Weave (Communications) team, coding is 80%+ of our time - we probably spend < 5% of our time in the categories on that list. Are any other platform engineering teams doing that much feature development, or are most teams using off-the-shelf IDP products?

I just joined yesterday to this group - So quite enthusiastic to ask my first query. Out team has many schedules running in different systems(windows mostly) and in a busy schedule, we forget to look at them on its failures or errors. Is there an OSS tool to manage them centrally or is there a nice way to see the schedules in one single pane of glasss and its execution history? Also we need version control for the such scripts (of course we use git but the script has to be copied to the server to run it.. in such scenarios it is has a high risk of getting modified). If there is a tool that can manage both that will be awesome !

So far most (99%) of the app and infrastructure configuration management setups take a static approach to config mgmt, meaning the setup gets manually scripted by humans for each environment and against a static set of infrastructure components. This static approach causes problems every time a team wants to do things that go beyond the simple update of an image (e.g., rolling back, changing the config, the application architecture, etc.). I highly encourage you to read the article written by @Kaspar about what is a dynamic configuration management and how it could be a life (and time) saving component for your internal developer platform.

Happy Monday! I just read an article about NoOps and how it can act as a self-service model where a cloud provider becomes an ops department. Has anyone here worked on a NoOps basis? I honestly can’t imagine this working well in real life, based only on serverless or PaaS products.

Migrations! The Principal Eng on our Platform team wrote up a great article on the psychology of migrations and the difficulty in sparking action. It is hard to get people to read and take action without causing panic. https://vectorbeta.wordpress.com/2022/09/24/moving-and-panic/

I haven't listened to the podcast, but a valid argument might be that the space is sooo large that global expertise is simply not possible for a single human?
n

Well, it's not really about the global expertise...

"it's not really about the global expertise..." idk, If someone says they are an expert in Python, for example -- I expect that person to be able to answer almost any question I have in the Python space, same for expert mechanic, carpenter, etc. Generally, being able to do so requires significant time and exposure (exposure as a percentage of the available knowledge.) If one chooses that definition of expertise, which I believe to be a reasonable one, then one could say that platform engineering is so large and so new that no individual has either had significant time-exposure nor can claim a large percentage of knowledge of the entire space. I think this is more true for very dynamic technologies in which the space is ever changing. No human can keep a current mental model of the entire space.
