On November 24th, tune in to Terraform Practices - the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly with @Hila F. Hila is an all-rounder: Senior DevOps Engineer at Wix with more than 15 years of experience in tech, public speaking, DevOps, mentoring and even singing! During the webinar Hila will talk about how to utilize Terraform in a broader context rather than just an “infrastructure as code" tool, among many other things. After a 30-35 minutes talk, there will be 15 minutes for Q&A. We’d like to encourage you to submit your questions in advance. “As business needs, platform capabilities, and user traffic increase, the complexity of the systems and the platform itself inevitably increases. Thus, it becomes critical to be able to manage and orchestrate this complexity by adopting the right technologies and planning forward‑looking strategic choices.” Our CTO Nati Shalom, writes about the need for platform engineering and the challenge around the complexity of cloud orchestration. https://cloudify.co/blog/what-is-platform-engineering/

Hey folks, an interesting discussion going on internally and I was looking to hear the community’s opinion on this We’re “building a platform” by standardizing on top of crossplane, the issue came up when one of the guys was tasked with delivering S3 as a platform offering (catalog item) Argument 1: We should expose everything the S3 API has to offer since we can’t anticipate all user needs The counter to that is that we’ll be providing support for configuration, and that’s not the platform approach Argument 2: We should provide an abstraction that is S3 The counter to that is that we’ll be playing catch-up every time a new demand comes in and users will bypass the platform whenever it doesn’t serve their needs. You can imagine the debate has much more details and counters to it, but I’ve brought the gist of it here to see 1. how much of an issue is this? are people facing this dilemma often? 2. what’s the more common approach? I don’t think there’s a right or wrong it’s a matter of what fits, but still if there are any stories around this I’d love to hear 3. just opinions in general if there are any

I have listened to this podcast yesterday, by Daniel Bryant who sat down with Joe Duffy, founder and CEO at Pulumi, and discussed several infrastructure-themed topics: the evolution of infrastructure as code (IaC), the way in which the open source Pulumi framework allows engineers to write IaC using general purpose programming languages such as JavaScript and Go, and the future of multi-cloud environments. It is quite an old one, from 2020, but still really interesting. https://www.infoq.com/podcasts/infrastructure-code-multi-cloud/?itm_source=podcasts_about_golang&itm_medium=link&itm_campaign=golang

as you may have guessed, bit of a fan of Platform Engineering and platform teams building Internal developer Platforms to allow devs to self service. The cloud is now too complex and I my belief is for platform teams to embed their knowledge in IDPs so that devs dont have to know all the infrastructure stuff for their app

also IaC is too difficult for most people now, when we typically end up deploying boiler plate well architected options, why can the IaC products have the abrastration built in, I am trying to change things, IaC hasnt changed much in 15 years, still too complex for small businesses who dont have devs and architects and too time consuming for architects and engineers who want to just quickly deploy stuff for POCs and testing

dont get me wrong, for companies with dev teams and architects, Terrafrom, Puppet, Ansible and all these great tools have a place, but they are not ideal for SMBs and prototyping or POCs

I've been putting together a series on Defining a Platform Engineering organization, based on my experience at Netflix and now most recently Doma. My latest article talks about the importance of developing a vision that clarifies what your organization will focus on, and how to find those "pebbles in the shoes" that your engineers really need removed. Also a big shout out to @Aeris for help with this latest article. I hope you enjoy it! (I have two more coming out, I'd love any input or feedback to help make these very useful for folks)

There are a lot of talks around platform engineering, in my view it's not the technical part what is the most difficult part, but the mindset. From building and maintaining infrastructure, to platfom as a product. Meaning doing discovery, user interviews, data driven feature delivery... more a mindset change. Who knows a good talk (youtube?) around this part of platform engineering? Around 30 minutes to keep the attention of engineers. 😉

Are there any platform engineers based out of London 🇬🇧 here? The current meetups lack face-to-face meetings, which I so much enjoy. Hence would love to help host these going forward with talks from fellow platform engineers. So are you based in London, and would you be interested in face-to-face meetups? React with 🇬🇧 and join us here #london
