Would appreciate it if someone could chip in to understand the scope of In-Cluster Resources. I'm keen to add https://opensource.zalando.com/skipper/ but before I do that, would like to hear if that's the right place.

Hi hi! Im currently doing a personal research around how to implement an IDP in the enterprise. My main goal is: • Gather ideas to push internally in my current employer • Understand if it is possible to implement something generic enough open source glueing already existing solutions like: backstage, dagger, acorn, kubernetes.....

I am planning to become a platform engineer. I have some experience as a software engineer but I need help figuring out where to start. Can someone give me a brief roadmap for platform engineering. Which technologies or tools should i start with.

Thread: How can someone with minimal programming experience contribute to/back to the open source community? Or, to reword, what is the most valuable type of contribution you see missing in Open-Source project that is not directly connected to coding?

Hi friends. Shoreline just launched a free Incident Insights tool that uses ML to cut through the noise in PagerDuty ticket data to identify frequent causes and help SRE teams focus on solving issues instead of chasing fires. We’d love you to give it a try and give us feedback. Can you take it for a spin?

Hello Platform Community!! From a recently created Platform Team we are facing an initiative to use Schema Registry. Now we are wondering to have a dashboard to show all the events, producers, consumers, versions, etc.. Is there someone in the room with experience with that who wants to share the knowledge with me? Thanks in advance!!

Hey everyone, we wrote a small piece on the conundrums of task prioritization, postmortems, and deadlocks in incident management and issue tracking. Tried to make this one a little more jovial than the rest with some fresh metaphors, let me know if you liked it in the replies! https://blog.zenduty.com/blog/2022/12/14/faster-rca-prioritizing-tasks

Question to those who are building/adopting IDPs. What are the organisational pre-requisites? What are the skills, cultural behaviours and tech that both your users and those building the IDP need to have? Are you expecting the IDP to fill these gaps? Or do you have other programs to address the gaps whilst building the IDP? For example, does your org understand what CI is? and culturally understand the value of building in small increments? Do devs know how to use Git well?

In a previous thread, @Angel Barrera Sanchez said:
IMHO: even with the right tech skills, is up to the middle management the success of implementing an IDP.
    And later @Scott Collins added:
the challenge comes in the form of leaders who have worked at large orgs with silo’d platform or devops teams who view that particular pattern as the solution to all their problems, when in fact it can result in “platform stuff” being everybody’s and nobody’s responsibility at the same time
I’ve been doing this sort of work for a long time, and the most difficult challenges for me have consistently been successful collaborations with management, mostly middle. I’ve been in small orgs where “throw it over the wall to devops — it’s their job to handle it” was the position. I’ve been in larger orgs with mostly siloed “platform” teams pursuing efforts that weren’t taking the real needs of all the dev teams into account and had turned almost into “tail wagging dog” situations. I’m not bad at winning over other devs… I’m a dev myself, and with a little effort, I can gain their trust by making their lives easier through solving technical challenges. But as an Individual Contributor (IC), bringing managers onboard with a collaborative platform effort has proven to be much harder for me. Their incentives are different, and adding value for them can be more subtle. I’d appreciate hearing some “war stories” from ICs who have successfully forged collaborations with management to launch platform efforts. And I’d love to hear from managers who were themselves won over to such efforts. What approaches worked? What didn’t?

Does anyone have a take on streaming processing of documents? Our current architecture comprises Kafka + “pipelines”. We stream from one topic to the next, running our ML models in between. While this is fairly reliable, the “from-scratch-approach” is fairly expensive. It’s on our bucket list next year to reevaluate this. Maybe it’s possible to use an iterative process? Then again, our current setup has very few limitations in terms of reliability and scalability.

But basically if we create a new release from scratch we spend anything in the order of 20K to 30K on it because we compute everything from scratch.

Hi, is there a general agreement in this Slack group on the working definition of a platform? I like the one by Evan Bottcher as quoted by the Team Topologies book in p. 92:
A digital platform is a foundation of self-service APis, tools, services, knowledge and support which are arranged as a compelling internal product. Autonomous delivery teams can make use of the platform to deliver product features at a higher pace, with reduced coordination.

I prefer this definition too - however in practice I see a lot of folk gravitate to a more narrow definition like Infrastructure as a Service IaaS. for example when I talk to folk about doing Platform Engineering the almost exclusively talk about infrastructure - vs working on design systems etc
