Curious what everyone is working on this week? I am working on refreshing some of the default alert policies we give teams as part of their platform tooling in microservices. Specifically around some service alerting with istio metrics. What about everyone else?

Hi, I’m working/researching a way to get better info from our kubernetes logs (from our internal platform) and I wonder if anyone got any suggestions. I send pods logs to aws cloud watch and I wonder whats the best way forward: opensearch, elastic, splunk, graylog, etc Checking logs in cloudwatch is annoying.

My APM and I have been working on discovery of biggest platform problems according to our engineers building on the platform everyday. We conducted a bunch of interviews with senior engineers and synthesized into several reoccurring problems along with potential solutions that were proposed by various teams. I am really excited for it as a tool to prioritize our platform roadmap and help Leadership understand what we mean by all the "tech debt" that needs to be addressed. Hoping to come out with more understanding and buy in on platform priorities 🤞🏼

Hi Everyone, @Karolina Junčytė suggested I host the first AMA here. A scary honor... Hopefully this works out . I never hosted an AMA although I've been interviewed a few times. But despite that I find that even my friends don't really know half of the crazy stuff I did over my 30 year developer career. Hell, I forgot half of it myself... So to give you a sense of what you can ask about here's a bit of highlights to that career: * I developed OSS in the 90s and still do. I was doing distributed computing, Java and AI way back then... * Worked at Sun on and off for more than a decade where I did a lot of OSS too. Also for EA and a few other companies * Founded an OSS company (Codename One), also a consulting company in the late 90s which was crazy. Consulted for ~100 or so companies over a decade * Was the first non-founder employee at Lightrun where I wrote large portions of the initial product. Most of my code is still there. * Switched from hands on developer to Developer Advocate To kick this off here's an interesting piece of drama from the early days at Codename One https://talktotheduck.dev/production-horrors-handling-disasters-public-debrief The AMA is scheduled for April 19th 4pm GMT.

In general, platform features are of technical and complex in nature. So, product management fails to write good PRDs or requirements (in certain organizations..not a general case). Did you find similar challenges while building platforms? How you help Product managers and engineers for writing/analyzing good requirements. I would appreciate if people share their views or pointers. Thanks.

Hi, I'm Henning, former Head of Developer Productivity and long-time platform/principal engineer. I'm happy to give you a glimpse into Zalando's in-house builder platform and how we continuously improve the developer experience for our 1600+ engineers. I'll share our strategy and setup of our internal developer portal based on Backstage and how we provide a cloud-native application runtime based on Kubernetes/AWS. We will also touch on how we established a product mindset for our platform teams and what challenges we faced along the way. I hope that the webinar on May 3rd will help anyone on a similar journey get inspiration for their own platform engineering org 🙂 Please join the AMA session on April 26 15:00 CEST | 9:00 EDT time in the #platform-design track channel and ask me anything 🙂

Hey folks, thanks for all your input on the AMAs. It seems we can keep going with them 🤓 Lots of you were also asking about the current channels and why we are maintaining some that are less active (or some that are straight up dead 💀). So we decided to delete #event, #learning, #random and #security channels. Any objections? 🙂 We also wanted to create more technical channels for the most discussed approaches and technologies. We started with the obvious #kubernetes and #terraform, some of you already noticed them 😉. The content will be focused on technical discussions and tutorials 😊. We are kicking-off with some useful resources we found, go check them out and let us know what you think! PS. Just saw yesterday a few of our PMs here also created #product-management, go join if you are on the PM side too.

Hey! My (platform) team is aiming to provide a saas solution for group based authorization to our developers. Im wondering if somebody here already faced something similar. The main idea is to provide granular auth for this example: • Users in user-group 'group-name' are allowed to perform action 'delete /accounts/{id}' for accounts belonging to entity-set 'entity-set-name'. This article shows quite well what we are aiming for: https://build.diligent.com/fast-authorization-with-dynamodb-cd1f133437e3 Wondering if we can build it (thinking about apigw, custom lamba auth and dynamodb) or can leverage an exisiting solution(didnt find it). What do you think?

What metrics / KPI's you have for the product team? Product as Platform would suggest have customer metrics, like every other product. But how do you track customer engagement when it's internal customers?

Hey Community! We just launched a new open-source orchestrator and code generator Terramate for Terraform. We’ve built Terramate to solve issues when handling Terraform on scale that we experienced during our day-to-day work with customers. To mention some of the features that Terramate ships with: • Stacks: Splitting up your state into isolated units. A stack is a runnable Terraform Root Module that operates on a subset of the infrastructure’s resources and has its own state. • Keep you code DRY: Avoid duplication by easily sharing data across your project. • Code Generation: Generate valid Terraform Code to ensure that you can always enter a stack to run plain Terraform commands. • Stack Change detection: Only execute commands in stacks that have been changed in the current branch or since the last merge. • Module Change detection: Enhanced Change Detection allows to identifying stacks that have changes in local modules. • Execute Any Command: Terramate is not a wrapper of Terraform but can execute any commands in (changed) stacks. • Execution Order: Explicitly define an order of execution of stacks. • Forced Stack Execution: Ensure specific stacks are run alongside other stacks. • Pure HCL: All configuration of Terramate can be supplied in the well-known Hashicorp Configuraltion Language (HCL). We’d love to hear your feedback! Thanks!
