@viktor, would be interested in your opinion, how is platform engineering related to DevOps engineering? Not sure if I understood it correctly. Are we all going into platform engineering now? To reach DevOps? Also looking forward to @Nigel Kersten’s take on this tomorrow!🙌

I have a question for@Schuyler Bishop and @Michael Galloway. We’re struggling with Platform PM, as @Alan Barr said in one of the meetups, platforms tend to be super thick, so finding the thinnest possible MVP is always a challenge, same with taking care that the overwhelming backlog doesn’t become the roadmap. Any best practices you can share? 🙂

Maybe open question to all the platform builders/consumers: what kind of information/data/metrics/KPI would you like to communicate to your teams and/or leadership?

Loved the cognitive load graph across your life @Daniel Bryant!! 😀 So do you think UI is the best interaction method for using a platform? How do you think about developers who don’t want to open yet another UI and just stay fully code based?

    06/10/2022, 10:54 AM
Great question, Linda! I think the interaction mode definitely depends on the persona of the developers using the platform. In my experience, although many trail blazers/hipster developers like the CLI, the 99% developer prefers a UI

    Daniel Bryant

    06/10/2022, 10:54 AM
A related question (which I think you're hinting at) is whether the UI should be something new/external or live within the existing IDE

At the company I work at, we sometimes pitch our SaaS platform as "your second IDE"

@Daniel Bryant Personally I think both are needed, and love the focus on the 99% developer, do you think this changes over time for them as they want to integrate platform capabilities into other tools/workflows?
  • d

    Daniel Bryant

    06/10/2022, 10:57 AM
Yeah, @Nigel Kersten, I'm starting to think the same these days

    06/10/2022, 10:58 AM
In my experience the CLI is used more heavily at the start of a platform build (pioneering), as folks are figuring out what they need (tools, workflows etc) and gluing stuff together. The UI comes when you're standardising (settling)

+1 if you see a point in doing integration into the IDE then do, for me the most important is not marrying to the IDE and being able to pivot away from it if necessary without losing value (e.g. making it a two way door)

For example, with a Mesos platform build back in 2015 we used a lot of CLI to get started and then tried to hide/encapsulate this functionality within Jenkins and Rundeck as we better understood the "actions" most developers needed

We have seen many talks about Backstage. @Suzanne Daniels, @viktor, @Brian Leathem, @Nati Shalom, @Taras Mankovski: What’s the best way to use Backstage? And how to deploy from Backstage? And what about infra provisioning? As far as I understood it is more a catalog of items you have in your engineering org but it doesn’t manage your CI/CD pipeline, is that correct? I found the example with Humanitec pretty astonishing, never seen something like this before.

@Daniel Bryant If you make your platform accessible my UI mostly, how do you make sure that the setups are reproducible? We for example strive to have everything in code, so we provide mostly API or specific code fragments (interpreted by our platform and translated to infrastructure components). With stuff clicked in the UI, we would have the same issues just like e.g. doing this in the AWS console 🤔

"How to build a successful Platform Engineering team • @Eran Bibi - gofirefly.io " Sorry could not find a thread in the slack channels so starting one to ask questions. Have some questions for @Eran Bibi - gofirefly.io 🙂 • what platform did you build the Nebula platform on at Aqua? • When they went to GitOps, how did they GitOps the infrastructure code, were you using an CRD/Operator or something else? • We're there various other vendors/services integrated into Nebula? If so did you make a unified API on top of all of them or just the parts that Services cared about?

Greetings folks. Does anyone here have experience integrating security into platform design? I’m currently in the process of doing so and would love to get insight (tooling, processes, team structure) from those who’ve gone ahead of me. Topics of interest would be: • Pitfalls you’ve encountered • Security and SDLC (dependency vulnerability and container scanning) • SIEM • Multi cloud security and/or compliance (think HIPAA, GDPR) posture scanning and reporting • How have you “platformised” (somebody’s gotta add that word to a dictionary) security? ◦ Eliminate cognitive load from engineers by integrating security tooling into the platform ◦ How have you made vulnerability findings and recommended remediation more readily accessible to engineers? • What metrics are you using to measure the success of security initiatives/adoption/value? PS: I realise the scope of the question is pretty wide 😅 I’d be happy to split that into multiple threads OR maybe create a
    platform-security
    channel

for those who have been running large platforms cir + 100 dev teams, how do you document the platform architecture, how do you keep the documentation up to date when your infra is constantly changing, what tools are you using?
