Overall, the tool is only as good as the problems it solves. We have heard of some large companies that build in a bit of a vacuum and then two years after launch the Platform team is still struggling to get to 15% adoption for a specific feature.
Product can play an incredibly helpful role in a couple of ways:
1. Treating your engineering team like a customer and interviewing them to find out what their real pain points are and how widely that pain is felt. This will help you address the priority of the capabilities that you should address first
2. Assisting with evaluating the overall roadmap for the company and seeing what the highest leverage activity might be for the company when implementing a developer platform. Maybe it makes sense to purchase rather than build if you don’t have the horsepower to dedicate a full-time project team to this.
