Hi from another former QA. I officially changed titles about 3 years ago, but was in platform eng/devops teams for a bunch of years before then too. Happy to chat experiences if you ever want!

hey @Abby Bangser!! Very happy to hear from someone that pulled off the jump from QA to Plat Eng. I know you mentioned you had prior experience, but did you find the jump difficult? Do you recommend any courses/certs to help with this transition?

In my experience working with people who you have mutual respect with is the biggest pointer to success. The reality is that you have a crazy level of great skills that can support the team that likely isn't as focused on those activities/skills. But you also have a gap to fill where their biggest strengths likely lie. My first full-time platform eng gig was on a team that gave me confidence that I was bringing value day 1, even if I also had a gap to fill. This let me learn without stress. When I joined another team without that mutual respect I found my learning slowed a lot because stress was limiting.
As for courses etc I did very little (no?) formal training. But if you checkout this blog there are a lot of directions you can go based on your interestes/gaps/priorities etc. https://blog.alicegoldfuss.com/how-to-get-into-sre/

I appreciate the info, Abby! I will definitely check out the blog. I also agree that good team dynamics are crucial. Very reassuring!
