Hi all, I am new to the group. Really would love to get to know others that are working in Cybersecurity or studying to work in Cybersecurity. I decided to go back to school last year to update my old Computer Engineering degree to a Cybersecurity Bachelor's degree. My degree in Computer Engineering was definitely an Engineering degree, but really an Electronics degree, we only studied circuits and the way to build circuits and repair issues with circuits, In the 1990s when I went to Michigan State the Computer Engineering degree was added as a new degree and only had 1 programming class, Introduction to C++, all the other classes were in Electronics. I love the classes that I am taking now, especially with my 30 years of experience working in various job titles all related to IT department, most were specific to Infrastructure and keeping the systems up and running 24X7X365, I love my work, but I really wanted to change to a degree that really represented what I love the most, keeping people safe from all the attackers out in the real world! All the classes are really just teaching me how to use knowledge that I have learned working over the last 30 years in correct and legal methods to protect the people who are using the internet that I assisted in building. I was with IM most of my career and specifically worked on designing and building our three data centers and edge servers that would be given the name Cloud Computing when someone from IBM marketing gave Amazon our design for free while trying to sell hardware, Amazon had no idea why we were not selling all the space we had invented and had running so calmly out in the dangerous world of DDoS attacks that could not get through our first line of security. I am proud to say that I will be getting an associates degree in Networking in August and I will also be receiving my new Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity next year!!! I am very excited and cannot wait to have the paperwork to help prove all the knowledge I do have.
