Platform engineering is the discipline of designing and building toolchains and workflows that enable self-service capabilities for software engineering organizations in the cloud-native era.

A fair amount of this depends on your requirements (# of 9s, latency, etc), if you're in a datacenter or the cloud, and even which cloud provider. Stuff that is pretty easy to do multi-region in GCP, for instance, can be more challenging in AWS.

The 'Multi-region tax' is real, both in duplicated infra and in the cognitive load you'll be placing on your engineers. If the business can't clearly articulate the financial case for doing it, I would strongly recommend staying in a single region with multiple AZs.
