it’s pretty flexible. the most “accurate” title would be platform engineer
t
What about the titles of SRE?
j
SRE engineer, DevOps engineer, SWE
are you creating job families 🙂
t
I am not creating any yet 😀
a
keep in mind job families do weird things to org dynamics and incentive structures. Most people probably will go way farther by just having software engineers and focus on impact.
j
not many people should focus on titles to begin with
outcomes and impact reign supreme
a
member of technical staff needs to come back
i loath how many niche roles people have created. it just gives the “right” or perception you can say no.
j
like what on niche roles
a
platform engineer, cloud engineer, devops…
i have yet to see a software engineer working on a storage system vs a billing system ask for a different title.
j
in a way, the naming kind of helps outsiders to the team understand which flavor or ideology is being followed or implemented
i wouldn’t expect folks in devops to speak platform engineering, for example
platform engineers might speak devops, though
a
i would buy that if the same people weren’t just getting rebranded
j
sometimes it’s not just a rebrand. the trick is figuring out where it is and where it isn’t
a
the issue becomes evaluation vs ideology imo. If you give specific titles you need to look at mastery of craft at calibrations. the mastery becomes super precise and then you can easily end up with inflation if you stick to fewer roles that focus less on experience based/esoteric mastery impact becomes clearer and levels the playing field as well
j
are we discussing internal or external organizational dynamics here? want to make sure i am following so i can keep participating in this good discourse
a
internal dynamics btwn teams, engineers and leaders
j
for internal, i probably bet on a single job family, regardless of team focus / mission
externally, people can call themselves whatever they want
a
ok we are totally saying the same thing
j
violent agreement
the things that do matter in that situation are team names / departments
since those do have a meaning, both internally and externally
t
Is it fair to say that if DevX is in a department named platform engineering, DevX team individuals can have titles as Platform engineers ? (Ofcs, the roles/responsibilities are based on Team remit)
j
platform engineering is the practice that focuses on improving the DevEx in a given organization
to that extent, the answer to your question is yes
but they can also be
software engineer
,
cloud engineer
,
devops engineer
, etc
assuming the department and team is actually practicing the concepts of platform engineering, the most accurate title would be
platform engineer
e
sorry to re-surface the discussion; but where would an IAM engineer, security engineer fit in?
