Self-promotion --> a dedicated channel, or wherever (but this 1/5 rule must be in place?)

I’m going to do another poll later this week specifically on channels. It seems like the majority are either completely empty, or fairly inactive. So I am going to ask specifically on that about a link sharing channel. I think the key issue is people sharing links without actually being participants in the community. For now, people can still share in General. But they’ve got to make sure 80% of what they post aren’t links 😄

Not sure what the exact rules should be but I support the idea behind this initiative of creating a better community here and lowering the amount of spam and drive-by link posting

you should look at what the old IRC channels did in terms of publishing stats etc. Make it transparent on how participation is judged etc. There’s a lot of prior art here from the early 2000's from usenet and IRC

I like this idea, it a a good one to keep high engagement with the community members. Good job. Maybe time to develop a bot to automatically check this and enforce the rule @Luca Galante 🤣

@Luca Galante one of the other communities I'm in has a rule about not posting links or "self-promo garbage" unless you're known to participate in conversations. It's a rule I really like, and I frankly have everything in this community muted except for #jobs because if I wanted to read my LinkedIn feed, I'd go to linkedin. I would participate more if there wasn't this artificial self-promotion air about things here.

… we can always ban self-promotion at all :) I would vote for that despite the fact I am self-promoting sometimes. I’d rather not do it at all than having information noise in the channel I use for self development & promoting the Platform Engineering as a concept.

A channel for finds can be useful - in the discord for one of the projects I maintain we have a finds channel, and finds can spawn threads which can be useful. Its nice to have them distinct from the chattier or more conversational channels
