it really should be the inverse. in practice, i would expect the job title to matter a lot less as opposed to the impact, scope, hard skill sets required. as we all know, there is a lot of overlap between these 3 different archetypes
i usually recommend reading the JD and/or talking to a recruiter / HM to get a sense for the actual role

Totally agree on getting the human touch (it's also a better way to be seen vs. getting pulled in/out via AI resume readers). In the general sense, though, it seems odd that these are lower - it's still an engineering discipline, and it's helping accelerate the rest of your org (when done well...)

it’s probably a timing thing. platform engineering is still a novel and maturing concept within the industry
we’ll see oddities like the one you observe until it becomes more mainstream and an adopted practice

Are there any trends in the companies you see offering lower comp? Early in the DevOps era larger legacy businesses tried to hire at lower $ to move away from high priced sysadmins, but it didn’t last more than a year or two. The excuse was often the economy (this was right after the 08 recession)

I’m going to say (and this is just an opinion) it’s scope. If you ask around to different tech people… “you have a startup company and a developer but you could only hire 1 other position based on title alone, (SRE/platform engineer/devops/cloud engineer)
I found most people respond DevOps.. only because they’re assuming they have a more general technical scope. It’s mostly all about perception imo not so much based on skills or reality.

Interesting. I recently gathered a bunch of data through this community, the newsletter and then aggregated job data from boards and the result was that Platform Engineers make a pretty resounding larger amount than DevOps. That was 4 months ago, but it’s unlikely to have flipped that dramatically so fast.

Ok I gathered some data and looks like you’re correct. Here’s what I found in median salaries: 1.) SRE - $165,315 2.) Platform - $133,164 3.) DevOps - $118,500
