Blind is saying that "those with remote as location were impacted," which makes sense if you look at the skeleton crew that remained. I know Kevin was in-office on paper and he survived the cut even though it's a technicality as he mentioned to me he wasn't swiping his badge because he prefered working remotely so was remote in practice, in office in theory. @Josh Swain was remote on paper, but in the office regularly. So it seems possible that was the rationale, if it says you are remote in the system you got axed. Not that it really matters, but part of processing it I guess.
@Nicholas Philbrook @Brandon Figueroa are you guys both "in office on paper?" To test Blind's theory
b
Yes
z
I'm remote in Boston and not in the office ever 😄
b
Oh wait
h
I think I recall Figgy was in office but can't recall if Philbrook was
b
No I was remote
h
Oh ok
Then Blind theory busted
z
I live like 5 miles from the office lol meme
b
They forced me to switch it to in office though
j
Figgy is meant to be a SRE
Same for a few others
b
Per my email I got saving I was saved but you need to go to office
j
I think thats what "saved" them today
z
also in Berlin they cut multiple people who are full time in-office, and left 1 person that is full remote
h
Yeah folks on Blind were saying it has nothing to do with whether you were actually physically in the office or if you swiped your badge but rather whether your location was remote, and also it doesn't matter if you were remote Boston or remote wherever, just whether your location was listed as remote. Which sounded plausible but if Figgy is still at Wayfair and he is remote on paper then it doesn't hold.
z
yah same with the situation in Berlin that I mentioned
j
Berlin did avoid the fate of the 2023 RIF cohort but the powers that be didn't miss twice
s
Fiona sent an email after saying that 10 % of remote was retained and said "that is where we would like to be"
j
Percentage wise, thats probably true. Current team composition of that number may still need work, however
E.g. it may not be the roles in the right places, teams and levels yet
I wouldn't get comfortable
s
My team Site search , all remote and Berlin ppl were let go today
j
Yes, you and Arthur are holding down the fort now
s
I wouldn't get comfortable
As Wayfair says .... We are never done ....firing
n
I am officially VT_Remote as of July 2021. You want to hear a horror story of taxes........ (Well maybe another time)
There was definitely a trend but some exceptions.
I am prepared for anything 🫡
j
I guess co-location matters, but it doesn’t explain Josh.
i
I was Canada Remote, but also a regular fixture in the office. I was looking forward to the discussed plan to build out a more robust function in Toronto if given the option to leave or be tied to the office, I would have chosen the office. I already had...
j
That is because Niel is on parental leave and law forbids companies from firing employees on maternity or paternity leave
z
Ah. Too bad here in the US, W laid off a woman in commercials who was 1 weeks into maternity leave.
j
I heard about someone else also kike that. It is sad
j
Unfortunately, Jemshad is right. I suspect Niels will be presented with alternative placement roles when he gets back (possible different team, level, some combination of both even) or be transitioned out
