Hey all, during an interview, do I tell them that ...

Hey all, during an interview, do I tell them that I am still employed at Wayfair or let them know that I was laid off and on administrative leave? Should I talk about my last role at Wayfair in past tense?
z
there's zero shame in the layoff, you can just say that
I've totally disclosed it
4 phone calls so far, they were all aware of the layoff anyways
z
got it. So even with my resume, i should update January 2024 as the end of last role instead of present.
z
thats what I did
I've been very joking/nonchalant about it and have gotten some laughs from the recruiters
j
for others reading - technically speaking, you are employed until march 19th
at that point in time, you flip it to was
z
when they ask my 'timeline' I've said that I'm not in a rush, but I do point out that I have a very open calendar 😄
z
Yeah, that was my thought, Jordan. It just feels weird to use present tense when I am not doing it anymore.
j
try grafana labs, zubin
they may have roles that are a good fit for you
z
I have a contact there
j
remote first organization
z
he loves it
j
try datadog
chronosphere
new relic
talk to jim hagan at NR
z
also I know the leads on Loki and Tempo from grafana, I was an early adopter and was on their community calls all the time
z
zach will your contact be willing to refer me?
j
tell him “jordan was a shit boss anyways”
zubin, i would try to get into interview shape first
z
haha yes, this week work on resume. Next week reach out the network is my plan.
j
leave the high quality leads for later
z
yup agree!
z
Grafana is pretty interesting, they work entirely in Go but they don't expect anyone to know Go on arrival and they will hire and teach you
j
high margin products too
z
also not public right? so kinda a startup which is good
j
the only high quality leads that i burnt so far were roles that i knew were going to close very fast and/or were timed
i had nothing to lose on
pre-IPO on GL, yes
z
zach will your contact be willing to refer me?
Probably!

Keep “present” as your employment but disclose that you will be transitioning out.
that’s what I’d do
While it’s a technicality, there are many legal implications of it that makes it worth distinguishing. If you’re still on a payroll, which you are, the results of your work can be claimed to be IP of your current employer, same for confidentiality and severance. It possible that W won’t care at all but it’s something to keep in mind
z
I am glad i asked this questions. Thanks all
p
for folks who are in payroll till March 19 there is no reason for you to mention that you were laid off etc. Just present the situation as you are looking for more stable environment due to recent turmoil etc. you are not lying or saying anything incorrect. Truework still will show that you are employed till March 19
Gives you better leverage with compensation negotiations
j
not sure if there's much leverage
the market is tight
p
Jordan it’s all about how one sells oneself. Please don’t sell oneself short. Market had always been tight if that’s what the belief was. If you believe in something enough then it will happen hence if you have faith, believe in oneself and work hard you will succeed. Hence if you believe you can land an opportunity for better compensation you will.
j
you are right. TIL Prakash is Compensation Buddha
a
So, with Prakash’s correction, we can settle on - you’re still employed but don’t disclose that you’ll be transitioning out proactively, unless explicitly prompted. For people with Visas, I also believe that it means their 60 days start from Mar 19th. It may be somewhere in the docs already but if not - worth checking to see what happens to severance if your termination date moves “in”. I.e., you find a job earlier and move on. In this case, it may be considered voluntarily termination?
p
If anyone gets an offer to join new position, please have the start date after March 19. Make it even after xx weeks ( where xx weeks is the # of weeks of severance paid ) Then apply for unemployment on March 20th. It’s about $1000+/week in ‘MA’ so not small amount. Enjoy the time you are getting with your family or loved ones. Once back in the grind hard to get this kind of opportunity. :)
