I found https://github.com/EqualExperts/slack-gardener quite useful to keep channels under control
k
Creating new channels is fine, IMO, the biggest thing that needs to happen is a few folks need to take a leadership role besides yourself, Luca. (I'm not volunteering for this, my plate's overflowing.) This includes mod powers and starting conversations in specific channels.
p
Communities rarely thrive when over managed and accordingly things like channel creation need to be flexible.

How about conducting a poll to decide on creating or deleting a channel??
l
Challenge there @AddisT is the sheer number of channels. I’d be open to that @Karl Katzke - the Wayfair channel seems to be working really well in that regard. My goal here @Paul Lundin is to really have it be as unmoderated as possible, it’s just gotten a bit out of hand in terms of links, and people using the community to promote but not engaging with the community.
p
That I agree with. I don't think that problem is because of channels tho don't really know for sure 🤷🏻
r
Does it really cost anything to have a lot of channels? If the cost is low (or zero), the value of low-friction contribution might be worth it. I cut my teeth on USENET newsgroups, and those number in the tens of thousands.
(that said, since this slack isn’t on a paid plan, any channel that’s been idle for a few months is unreadable anyhow. could easily be clobbered and recreated when someone who cared came along…)
l
That’s part of the issue @Ron Hough, this can’t be a paid channel as it would cost upwards of $150k+ a year which obviously makes no sense for a community like this. And so we run the issue of 50-100 channels that are both completely inactive and also not readable anymore

There's other very alive communities that don't have the self-promotion problem like this one does that are on unpaid slack plans. The difference is there are some really active community leaders in them that start discussions and keep them going, and a lot of members that participate.
