Lolol
a
we’ve been hiring for these roles since last year I believe?
h
Ah I see yeah maybe this is an old one
I just saw a bunch of India roles when searching Wayfair and folks on Blind were saying that they're outsourcing a lot to India so it seemed to confirm that idea but perhaps it is unrelated to recent layoffs
z
@Jordan Chernev You have spent at WF a long time. Is this newly found India push is only about the cost or the management got changed or and India based hub was always on the horizon?
j
good question, zeta. hard to tell to be honest
i wasn't a part of these discussions historically so i don't have much high level context to share i am afraid
z
just curious about the driving forces and how that will work on the long run.
j
my rough guess is that the technology team will likely be split between NA and IN
what ratio exactly that looks like is likely fluid over time
i wouldn't be surprised if it lands on 60% - NA and 40% - IN
h
If you look at the "Wayfair Careers" page and you search for, say, "Software Engineer", I can see 33 results for software engineer positions. 28 of those are in Bangalore, India. 3 of them are in Boston, 1 is in Austin, and 1 is in Toronto, but all but 2 of them are junior roles, and those two are mid-level (SWEII).
Seems to support Blind's thesis
@Jordan Chernev What is NA? Non-applicable? IN I assume is India
j
IN - India
NA - North America
z
I guess this is also related to how WF failed to capture a good position on the EU/German market
j
i don't think the two are related, zeta
after all, wayfair doesn't have a customer market presence in India
z
But yeah it was kind of visible in the last year that there will be a big shift towards India in engineering sourcing
I have some ideas :) I agree with you Jordan on the market presence. I am not an accountat but would be cool to see how tax and moving fin assets around steer those decisions

From my past experience with other businesses: If a company opens an office in Bangalore, expect a TREMENDOUS cost cutting followup.
