šŸ‘‹ Hi everyone, I'm conducting a brief research project to determine the typical ratio ranges of platform engineers to product engineers across various industries. My goal is to compare our setup at Deliveroo with industry standards or common practices. 🧵 I would greatly appreciate any insights or comments on this topic. Thank you!
to start with, a friend at Atlassian shared that the total number of platform engineers is roughly 15%-20% of all engineering workforce.

We're at 10 to 200, so not the best ratio šŸ˜„
j
about 10 within a large financial services company in the UK with about 200+ developers so similar. Although we are still in the develop/launch phase

10 to 350, but definitely understuffed imho šŸ˜‰ (even management agrees)

Out of interest, what does everyone include in platform engineering? Reason I'm asking is because we have separate platforms teams covering the following areas: • Network, edge and compute • Kafka • DBRE • Release Engineering • SRE But we also have internal teams covering: • Machine Learning • Experimentation And are spinning out teams to cover internal tooling and observability I work alongside @Szymon Kikla by the way šŸ‘‹šŸ¾

This piece might be useful to you as well even though it's more focused on devprod teams rather than the total platform engineers. https://getdx.com/uploads/allocation.pdf

Really useful, thank you!
