Hi Chris, this is a link to slides that I presented a few years ago which has some high-level information on types of roles that exist within a platform team and types of responsibilities that platform teams have: https://static.sched.com/hosted_files/cfseu18/7a/Platform%20as%20a%20Product%20CF%20Summit%20Europe%202018.pdf

Thanks Paula ! Going through them now 🙂

Slides are from 2018 but a lot of the ideas are still themes that came up in PlatformCon

Hey Chris. I also have an older presentation from 2018/2019 that contains some thoughts on platform teams and a platform mindset. Perhaps there is something of interest in there for you: https://www.slideshare.net/SanderKnape/platform-engineering-101

We posted some details about it not too long ago - https://engineering.mercari.com/en/blog/entry/20220116-blog-series-of-introduction-of-developer-productivity-engineering-at-mercari/ let me know if you need more info :)

These are all really great resources. What are your thoughts on a non-running platform ? A set of guidelines and modules for example. The platform team does not run a platform, but rather informs platforms run by product teams.

Tech aside, it doesn’t make economic sense. Now you end up repeating the toil of running and maintaining across several product teams. Sure, for some specific products the freedom of doing that might be worth it but for most teams it’s not. If your platform is based on Golden path approach then you don’t really need to think about such things.
