Are you looking for discoverability or actual operative developer workflows including deployments and stuff? That is quite a difference:
l
I am still researching but was looking for a service catalog + self service to spin up the services from the catalog . Thought of using templates within backstage. Not looking for full developer workflows at the moment as that's not that simple for us - we are not using kubernates. Thanks for the link!

Whuu, go it. In that case Backstage is definitely the right thing to look at imo!

There is a good sample implementation inside Tellus they did recently.
Let me find this for you

Really worth watching!

That's amazing - thank you!

Sure thing!

What alternatives to Backstage are you considering?
l
Backstage is our current choice. In the past, I have used Jenkins to coordinate various self-service workflows. That wouldn't be enough for us now as we would like a bit more user friendly UI and some service catalog features that easily come with backstage. Do you have much experience with it? If so, how are you finding it? We are at the very beginning of our journey
k
They are good for documentation, they don't shine if it comes to the execution and deployment side of things.

@LJiljana Holden We have no experience yet, in the same situation as you are @Kaspar can you share more? What’s not working well?
k
Sorry, didn't monitor this. @Jelmer Borst let's put it like this: it's unfortunately still pretty much focussed on the Spotify workflow. I've been able to set this up well for internal documentation. The operational elements of my daily work was hard to impossible.

Hi guys, I work for a fintech here in Brazil, we are developing our own IDP, we are using backstage for the user interface and service catalog, and initially we have a CICD stack using github as code repository, tekton for CI, Harness for the CD and use Helm to create an abstraction and automation layer. Last week we released the first version for users to build new microservices with Java and PHP templates. Our current challenge is to measure usage and extract the right metrics, is anyone also in this process?

We're starting to look at OpsLevel. Everything out of the box. Scorecarding system looks good too
