I usually use a reseller. Depends on the vendor manager and whether it is a good use for their backlog time otherwise depends on the sale needs. Does that make sense?
never split the difference should be a skill in your job, personally
Not sure i've worked on these things recently but ERP, CRM, Loan Platform usually require a configuration engineer dedicated to one system and updating those changes. They're good but hard jobs because they can be tedious and crash the house of cards on their work.

Sorry, @Alan Barr, you lost me. What “sale needs”? And what difference should one not split?
If I don't have a dedicated vendor management I might have a more complicated sale conversation. Pricing can be either easy or complicated I don't know how to get away from that other than just doing the deal so that is benefit for worth. We might be talking about different experiences
I don't if you've ever spoke to Casey Winters at Eventbrite. I wouldn't surprised if you already talked about this idea with Casey

@Alan Barr Maybe I shouldn’t have used the phrase “vendor management” at all; I’m not asking about the vendor-facing side of things. I’ll try again… One of the problems the users of my IDP have is managing source code. The product I will deliver to solve that problem is a version control system. We do a buy-vs-build analysis and decide that we won’t roll our own from scratch but will incorporate a commercial tool into our delivered product. We need to plan and account for that last mile, the work to close the gap between the off-the-shelf tool we buy and the organization-specific product we deliver. I’m asking about that work. It may be quite small for any given tool, but in aggregate across an entire IDP it adds up.

Oh ok! I misunderstand the ask. https://www.amazon.com/Technology-Strategy-Patterns-Architecture/dp/1492040878 In this book Eben Hewitt uses a Ghost/Ask deck filling in information makes a no brainer to executives. Sounds like a commodity app you make a little custom? I did this with a good effect one and worked really well with executives.
If you have buy-in and resources then it comes down to pacing the work and communicate consistently. https://lethain.com/migration-isnt-failing-due-to-lack-of-staffing/ that is my two cents
