It makes me wonder why small teams are building IDPs... Like, to me it seems they are important when you need to scale up your engineering org to thousands of ppl. Not when literally everyone in the company knows each other?

Depends how the question is interpreted. We have 3-400 engineers building application/services on the platform, our platform team(s) are fairly small at 14 in total.
